Argyle socks originated in Scotland with clansmen who cut their tartans on the bias to wear as foot coverings. They are a style associated with duffers, the classic golfer’s outfit, the sport also originating in Scotland. In the early 1900’s football uniforms were made with an argyle pattern on the jersey and long socks. But as part of a casual wardrobe, they came to the states and were popularized in the 50’s by the president of Brooks Brothers, John Clark Wood. Argyle socks have since come in and out of fashion for both men and women, so much so that it is considered a classic style by many.
These days, there’s a great variety of argyle socks to choose from depending on your needs or style. They are made in nearly every sock category we have on this blog. Knee socks, over the knee socks, kids socks, novelty socks, wool socks, slipper socks, athletic socks, toe socks, dance socks, seamless socks, as well as unique socks of as many colorful combinations as you can imagine.
Argyle style is amazingly versatile. It compliments well with business attire, casual evening wear, and easily worn with every day jeans and t-shirts. From classy to preppy to funky, argyle socks are for everyone.
Now that summer is winding down and you’re needing some warmth for your feet, grab some argyle socks to add interest and eye-catching style to your wardrobe.
